Golden Years Rescue (GYR) is being established so that older companion animals and lonely, isolated, homebound senior citizens can truly enjoy their retirement years. Most middle aged and senior animals do not make it out of shelters. Many senior citizens have no family to visit them and are truly all alone. A furry friend would add so much to their quality of life. GYR plans to rescue older animals before their time is up in shelters and match them to homebound senior citizens.
Because the seniors don't technically adopt any of our animal companions, these precious beings stay under the care, guardianship and protection of the organization. The organization bears all costs for vet visits, food and supplies unless a senior truly has the means. It is expected that this will be a rare exception.
Numerous volunteers are needed to visit the seniors and check on the animals several times a day depending on the type of animal and the abilities of the senior. Duties include walking dogs, feeding, changing water, changing litter pans, picking up yards, transporting to veterinarians, recording activities in a log, and emailing reports. This will take tremendous effort and dedication by a very large team of experienced as well as novis individuals. We want to make the best intuitive matches between animals and seniors to ensure truly golden years for all. Other volunteer opportuities include: administrative positions, coordinating with shelters, establishing the organization, recruiting and training volunteers, coordinating with senior agencies, record-keeping, marketing, and fund development.
